The popular and most common traditional Bali Chain design is Byzantine. As you will see in the photographs, individual solid silver sections are interlocked and articulated to give the chain flexibility. This Balinese method of making chain was passed down through the centuries from Buddhist Monastery traditions. Byzantine or Borobudur Chain, as it is called in Bali, derives it's name from a ninth century Buddhist monument in Java Indonesia. The monument is elaborately decorated with well over 2000 reliefs and more than 500 Buddha statues. Because the Borobudur Chain is designed in relief, it is likely, that is why it is so named. This ancient design, called Byzantine, is generally constructed of interwoven silver wire rings unlike the heavier Balinese conception. It is interesting to note that depending on where you are located geographically, the design is known by several other names. Some of the most common are Turkish Rope, Bird Cage, King's Braid and Idiot's Delight.
